Introducing New Data Structures Across Shopify

Whether you’re operating a side hustle or a global direct-to-consumer enterprise, you need systems that adapt to the unique, and at times complex, needs of your business.

Shopify comes with industry-leading workflows to help you sell your products online and in person. From product and order management, to checkout and post purchase campaigns, these workflows help you jumpstart your ecommerce operation.

But as your business grows, you may need to change your business workflows, or introduce new ways to manage your growing needs. Shopify now offers flexible data and content management to do just that.

Custom data management solutions

Shopify provides flexible data customizations that extend your store with custom fields (metafields), and custom objects (metaobjects).

Shopify metafields

Metafields are a flexible way for you to add and store additional information about a Shopify component, such as a product, a collection, and more. With metafields, you can easily create and display custom content on your online store—think ingredients, key features, related items, care instructions, and more. Metafields help you manage unique content about each product or collection without needing to change your online store’s design.

With our most recent updates, you can now manage metafields on your store locations and within the product bulk editor. If you are a Plus merchant, you can also manage metafields on companies and company locations. Developers can now extend the cart with metafields. In addition, you can create custom fields with our new rich text, money, and collection reference field types, as well as use them to power your automated collections. You can set up metafields on your store on the Custom data settings page.

Shopify metaobjects

With Metaobjects, a brand new feature within Custom data, you can create and manage custom content within your store and deploy it on your website. Metaobjects can be used to extend Shopify with richer, multi-field content like product highlights, lookbooks, or size guides, or to create entirely new commerce objects like raw materials, designer profiles, store events.

Using metaobjects, you can create and edit your content in one central place without worrying about publishing changes to your store’s website design or layout. You can also use metaobjects to power your custom storefront.

Some of the ways we’ve already seen merchants use metaobjects include product FAQs, collection banners, collaborator profiles, quizzes, and more.

Metaobjects Smash+Tess

Smash & Tess deploys content faster with metaobjects

Since using metaobjects, Smash + Tess lowered the time to publish a new collection release page template from 1 hour or more to a few minutes and have seen a 50% lift in ‘draft’ to ‘active’ product status publishing speed.

If you sell internationally, metaobjects work like all other content within your storefront and can be translated for each of your markets in the Translate and Adapt app. Metafields and metaobjects can also be used to extend back office workflows and improve system integrations.

Third-party content management solutions

We know that for many of you, not being able to easily integrate extensible content models into Shopify has created significant development overhead.

You can now use a third-party content management system and easily integrate it with Shopify using our fast, secure, and robust APIs. We’ve also worked with Sanity to make it simple to connect your custom content models into Shopify with the Sanity Connect App. Sanity users can now sync their product and collection data to and from Sanity, and use it to power their Liquid storefront.
