Shopify most popular ecommerce software in Germany

In Germany, small and medium-sized online stores often run on Shopify’s ecommerce software. The company has a market share of almost 40 percent in the country. German software providers Shopware and JTL complete the top three.

These data come from software provider Uptain’s study on the popularity of ecommerce software in Germany. More than 1,500 small and medium-sized online stores were analyzed.

Major ecommerce software provider Shopify came in first place, with a market share of 39.9 percent. German company Shopware came in second place, with 25.1 percent. And JTL had a market share of 12.3 percent. Magento, Prestashop and custom-built stores rank much lower, while these types of software are more commonly used by bigger online stores.

Strong increase since 2018

According to the study, Shopify increased its market share by 35.5 percent since 2018. On the other hand, custom-built stores decreased in popularity by 13.2 percent. This is most likely caused by the fact that most SME’s cannot afford these types of online stores. As Shopify is relatively cheap, it has become a popular alternative.

‘It seems unlikely that Shopify’s success will be slowed down in the next five years’

“Shopify has managed to conquer the German SME online shop market with a simple user experience and strong marketing. In practice, it continues to be evident that local shop systems lag behind in many aspects. It seems unlikely that Shopify’s success will be slowed down in the next five years”, said Julian Craemer, CEO and founder of Uptain.

Visitor numbers

Yet, when looking at website traffic, it seems that custom-built stores have the most visitors on average. Online stores running on Shopify generate less than half of that traffic. Because of this, custom-built stores are still an interesting option for online sellers.
